Drill holes, insert dowels and seal with wax. The dowels are made of birch (8x30 mm).

Judas´s ear is a gelatinous mushroom that is most commanly found on elder- Sambucus nigra near the coast in the south of sweden. Note that this is a new species for cultivation in Sweden and that it is uncertain of how far north it can grow. The mushroom is found growing on living elder and other trees which is why we recommend inoculating living trees but feel free to experiment with dead wood. Judas´s ear also occur on beech, ash, spruce, aspen and sallow which leaves room to experiment if you do not have access to elder.

Note that the right of public access (allemansrätten) does not allow for inoculation on properties other than your own or where you have been granted permission by the land owner. Inoculation of living trees will damage the tree and can kill it making it a hazard for bystanders, buildings etc. if it should fall. Inoculation in living trees is done at your own risk.

Instructions for cultivation on logs see attached file.

To grow mushrooms on logs with mycelium dowels, you need an 8mm drill, beeswax and a wax applicator. You can fin these items in our shop under their categories.

1. Choose live trees. Mainly living older specimens of true elder-Sambucus nigra. Judas ear also occurs on hornbeam, hornbeam, beech, ash, spruce, black poplar, aspen and willow, which gives the opportunity to try growing on these.

2. Drill 4 cm deep holes with 8 mm diameter. (You can find drills in the shop "Drills".)

3. Inserts the mycelium dowels in the holes using a hammer.

4. Seal the holes with beeswax using our wax applicator or use soft grafting wax. If you use beeswax; melt it beforehand in a pan through a water bath and dip the wax applicator in the melted wax, which you then "dab" on the holes once or twice. (You can find wax and wax applicator under "accessories" in the shop.)

Note!
This is a new species in mushroom cultivation in Sweden and it is uncertain how far north it can grow. The fungus occurs naturally near the coast in the southern parts of Sweden. Mushroom cultivation on living trees is not covered by the public right. Only grow on your own trees or where you have the landowner's permission and be aware that the tree takes damage and in the long run can die with the risk of damage to buildings and passersby if it falls. Grafting into living trees is done at your own risk.

True elder-Sambucus nigra. Judas ear also occurs on hornbeam, hornbeam, beech, ash, spruce, black poplar, aspen and willow, which gives the opportunity to try growing on these wood species.

All orders placed before 11:00 a.m. are shipped the same day. We deliver with DHL, and deliveries usually take 2-3 working days. At hot temperatures in the summer that exceed 25 degrees, we wait to send products containing mycelium until the temperature has dropped. This is to protect mycelium, which is sensitive at too high temperatures.
