Drill holes, insert dowels and seal with wax. The dowels are made of birch (8x30 mm) 100 dowels inoculates 3 meters of logs/stumps.

Turkey tail is not a choice edible but by many considered to have strong medicinal properties and is used in tinctures and tea all over the world.¨ Recommended substrates: Birch, beech, alder, ash, oak, poplar and willow. Instructions for cultivation on logs see attached file. (Trametes versicolor AKA Coriolus versicolor).

To grow mushrooms on logs with mycelium dowels, you need an 8mm drill, beeswax and wax applicator. If you have it at home, great! If not, you can find it in our webshop.

1. Choose fresh logs without damage to the bark.

2. Drill 4 cm deep holes with 8 mm drillbit in a zigzag pattern with 10 cm between the holes.

3. Insert the mycelium dowels in the holes using a hammer.

4. Seal the holes with beeswax using our wax applicator or use grafting wax. If you use beeswax; melt it beforehand in a pan through a water bath and dip the wax applicator in the melted wax, which you then "dab" on the holes once or twice.

5. Soak the logs for a couple of days or moisten well with a water sprinkler.

6. Place the logs standing or lying down in a shady place protected from the wind.

7. Soak/water the logs as needed to maintain moisture content.

Birch, beech, alder, ash, maple, oak, poplar and willow as well as other common hardwoods. Tough
types of wood give slower growth but give harvest over a longer period of time.

Fungal mycelium is resistant but cannot withstand high temperatures. If the climate exceeds 25, we wait for cooler temperatures before sending the packages in order for your products to arrive to you in the best possible condition.

It of course depends on how many logs you are going to graft and which tools you use.

 Three meters with a diameter of 35 cm takes about an hour from drilling until they are ready to be planted.

You make it even easier if you have the right tools. Such as Svamphuset's specially made drill for mycelium plugs and a wax applicator .

It takes between eight and fifteen months for most species we sell. Sometimes longer. But it also depends on the type of wood, how much water the log has, how much mycelium plug or fast-growing mycelium was grafted and what the weather is like during the first year.

Our tip for faster fruiting is to soak the log for 2-3 days before drilling holes.

Then make sure to double the recommended amount of mycelium in the log and keep the log moist during the driest and hottest months.

If you have access to store the log in a barn, carpenter's shed or similar during the winter, this can also speed up the process because the mycelium can then grow actively even during the winter.

Each mushroom species has its own favorites. You can find recommended types of wood under each mushroom species when looking at mycelium plugs, fast growing mycelium or log growing kits.

Generally speaking, most deciduous trees do well.

Harder types of wood such as oak and alder produce fungus for a longer time as the mycelium has more compact nutrients to consume.

Oak and birch are two types of wood that work for most of the species we sell.


But as I said, take a look at the species you intend to graft and check the specific recommended wood species for that particular species.

Depending on mushroom species, choice of tree, and size of log, you can harvest fresh mushrooms from two years all the way up to 10+ years. Larger logs take longer for the mycelium to colonize, but also provide more years of fungus compared to a smaller log that colonizes faster, but provides fewer years of harvest.

NO! They are not mold. Mycelium is usually white, fuzzy and is what we want on and inside our wood plugs. What you see in the jar is the mycelium that has grown strongly in and on the wooden plugs.
